O preço do pânico

Em 2019, a família coronavírus que, por milênios têm causado doenças respiratórias em milhões de pessoas ao redor do mundo, deu boas vindas a um novo membro. A doença causada, COVID-19, provou ser mais branda do que a gripe sazonal em muitas pessoas saudáveis abaixo dos 70 anos, mas foi aproximadamente 1.000 vezes mais mortal em pessoas velhas ou vulneráveis por terem graves condições pré-existentes.

Ao invés de focar em medidas protetivas para pessoas com elevado risco de adoecerem, governos ao redor do mundo têm imposto, e continuam a impor, severas medidas restritivas nas população inteira. Com os cuidados médicos descontinuados, comércio fechado, toque de recolher imposto, viagens restringidas e socialização criminalizada nós estamos causando prejuízos devastadores.

Os efeitos negativos do confinamento “lockdown” são frequentemente abordados como pequenos sacrifícios necessários para impedir o espalhamento de uma doença mortal. Esses sacrifícios são, de fato, nem necessários, nem pequenos. A doença é uma ameaça a uma minoria da população que pode ser protegida sem lockdowns. Algumas vezes, quando os maiores perigos tornam-se difíceis de serem ignorados, eles são lamentados como danos causados pela Covid, ao invés de culpar nossas medidas direcionadas pelo pânico. Esse é um esforço para trazer ao foco a magnitude do sofrimento que está acontecendo ao nosso redor em decorrência dos lockdowns.
